There is a whole other world out there and it is centered around medical cannabis. The buzz that this fast-growing industry has created is all for good reason. The clinical data that is hidden out there and personal recovery stories are endless.  However, even with all this information and knowledge, medical cannabis is still illegal and people are suffering.

So, let’s start with the fundamentals. What is cannabis?

Cannabis is a plant that has been around for centuries, the oldest known written record of cannabis use comes from the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung in 2727 B.C. From there, it has migrated across the world and, today is found everywhere. Cannabis is federally illegal in the United States although it has proven medicinal qualities. Cannabis contains over 400 natural chemical entities, which more than 85 of them are called cannabinoids. Today, we will focus on the two main cannabinoids that are creating such a buzz — THC and CBD.

Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a psychoactive cannabinoid, while Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid (psychoactive means “affecting the mind”). Our body’s CBD receptors are located primarily in our immune system while THC’s receptors are located primarily within our brains, causing the psychoactive side effects (known as a “high”).  According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), these psychoactive side effects of THC include “relaxing/euphoric effects, mental slowness, impaired reaction times, and sometimes accentuation of anxiety“.  The NIH also adds, “The adverse effects of cannabis appear overall to be less severe than those of alcohol…”(have no fear, I’ll address this in another post on Feel Your Best, LLC’s blog).

Many people I encounter almost always attribute cannabis to “smoking a joint” and “getting high.” My friends, that is only the THC side of this incredible plant. The other (more interesting side, in my opinion) is the CBD side, the side that heals without getting you high. CBD can be found in the oils of both the cannabis and hemp plants. Yes, cannabis is different from hemp! Short version, the main difference between the two plants is the level of THC. Cannabis (aka marijuana) plants contain high levels, while hemp plants contain low levels. Therefore, making CBD Hemp oil federally legal in all 50 states as long as the oil is, in fact, derived from the hemp plant and has a THC content of below 0.3%.

If you are taking CBD Hemp oil, you are not getting high because you are not connecting to those receptors primarily found in your brain. Instead, the CBD is connecting to the receptors primarily found in your immune system. That explains why CBD has been proven to reduce inflammation, anxiety and so many other symptoms per the NIH. Go to NIH.gov and search for “cannabidiol“, you will find almost 1,800 pieces of research!  To kick it up a notch, add a medical condition into that search bar and research all the info The National Institute of Health has done on CBD and your condition. Take that to your doctor and talk about getting yourself some legal CBD oil!

One piece of warning and advice, research your CBD Hemp Oil! With this industry boom, everyone is trying to make a buck off of those suffering and looking to get better. There are so many oils offered today, do your research and buy the purest and cleanest oil you can find. Just like our food, look at the ingredients of the oil.

– Are the oil’s ingredients safe/natural?

– How many ingredients are in the oil?

– Does the oil have fillers in them (products that don’t need to be in the oil)?

Also, find out what process is used to make the oil. A 100% solvent-free process is best to truly encapsulate a taintless oil and preserve all the benefits this oil provides. CO2 and solvent-based processes do not maintain the pureness of the oil. These oils are usually lower in cannabinoid and terpene concentrations than what is naturally contained within the oil.

With all that being said, I often get the question “What CBD Hemp oil does Feel Your Best recommend?” I personally recommend Guerilla Healer’s (GH) oils because they are 100% solvent-free, regularly tested for mold and impurities, and only contain 3 pure and clean ingredients (CBD hemp oil, organic coconut oil, and the vegetable capsule).
